Boy gets £2m as Visa cards go to 11 year-olds

July 3rd, 2008

Radcliffe. Going bananas A week after it was revealed that Lloyds TSB had been sending Visa-enabled debit cards to children as young as eleven, without parental permission, a student of 16 had a surprise with his new Visa Electron card. An error surrounding the card put £2m into his cash account. Elated, William Bowen withdrew the maximum he could that day (£300) and went to Curry’s to buy an iPod and then beyond. In his own words he “went bananas!” He claims he genuinely believed there had been an increase in his Government education maintenance allowance (some increase from the £30 a week he normally receives. Unfortunately for Will the error was spotted and he has been asked to return the £300! That seems a bit rich to me – it was Visa’s cock-up after all, and I wonder if they will be asking one of those 11 year-olds for the cash when the same error occurs again..? They better get a job with Nike or Primark if they are to pay off that debt!

HMV looking good as it begins to grow

July 3rd, 2008

Top Dog HMV has turned its bike around and seen its profits grow by 25%. That means it will accelerate the roll out of its new style stores. Last year boss man Simon Fox told everyone to iron their brown trousers as he embarked on a 3 year strategy to get the business back on its feet. He would have been happy to have broken even, so to get a sizeable profit means he’ll be very popular indeed. Video games and new products like the Wii have been a big booster. The new look stores include “transactional kiosks” (?!) and gaming areas. The new store in Heathrow’s T5 has been fitted out in this way and seen huge sales growth. The brand also plans to launch a loyalty card this autumn. Looks like HMV is here to stay.

Stobart saves 1,300 jobs at Logistics firm

July 3rd, 2008

“Harrow Driver” The Stobart group – who own fan boy trucking company Eddie Stobart – has saved 1,300 jobs at a chilled goods distributor called Innovate Logistics. Innovate went into administration (the bank takes over to normally bring matters to a close) on Monday by BDO Stoy Hayward, but now Stobart has stepped in to secure the firm for an undisclosed sum. That gives them a overall staff of 5,300 and 1,800 new trucks to their name. The bosses at Stobart say they can get the firm back on the road and expect it to generate £100m a year in turnover. Keep on trucking, as they say.

Landmark case makes Ebay rethink business model

July 3rd, 2008

Lovely A French court has ordered eBay to pay over £30m to luxury goods group LVMH for allowing online auctions of fake copies of its bags and perfumes. The brands affected include Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Givenchy. An eBay statement said LVMH was trying to “protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice” Erm….that must be in relation to 4 perfume brands - Dior, Guerlain, Kenzo and Givenchy - sued for what they called “illicit sales” of their products. They allege that even auctions involving their legitimate perfumes were illegal, because only specialist dealers were permitted to sell them. That all seems fair enough – these are their brands after all. The case is important as it means EBay may have to rethink their business model. Until now, this has been built around the simple notion of bringing together buyers and sellers, with minimal supervision from the company.
