Work experience girl tried to steal £60k from Freshfields
July 9th, 2008
Here’s someone destined for a place on my board: 19 year old Titilayo Olaifa (I bet she does) got a work experience placement at no. 3 City law firm Freshfields and promptly tried to steal £60,000 from them. She was jailed for 5 months for using the firm’s system to generate 11 company cheques forging her boss’s siginature and paying in 6 of them. £13,500 worth was cashed by the bank. Titilayo admitted theft and fraud but refused to divulge what happened to the cash. The student, currently doing a management degree at Essex Univeristy, claims she was forced to steal the cash by an ex-boyfriend. Keep your eyes peeled in 5 months time!!

Indian owners pledge to invest in Land Rover and Jaguar
July 9th, 2008
The new bosses of Jaguar and Land Rover - Indian car maker Tata - have pledged to invest in the car companies, not cut corners. They bought the two businesses last month in a £1.7bn deal from Ford. Both firm employ 16,000 staff and while Land Rover remains profitable, Ford never made money from Jaguar. Tata managing director, Ravi Kant, said it was in for the “long haul” and would do “whatever would be required”. Petrol-heads are crossing their legs in anticipation of a new E-Type Jag getting the luxury brand back on the road. When it bought the two brands from Ford, Tata pledged to leave the existing management and workforce in place and signed up to the companies’ existing business plans (yeah, because they were working well…)

Argos workers vote to strike
July 9th, 2008
Workers at retail chain Argos have voted in favour of strike action over pay in the wake of rising food and fuel costs. Staff at four distribution centres have rejected a 4% pay offer from Argos’ owner Home Retail Group - a below inflation pay rise. 1,200 of them distribution staff will stage a series of 24-hour walkouts. A spokeswoman for Unite, the UK’s biggest trade union said “This is a hugely profitable company and all our members are asking for is a fair share of the wealth they’ve worked so hard to create.” The P45 is available on page 339 of the new Argos catalogue…
