Airline woes: Qantas scraps plans for 1,200 new jobs

July 21st, 2008

Drop me off at the beach… You could feel buttocks clenching down under when Qantas airline said that soaring fuel costs meant it had to axe 1,500 jobs – 20% of management and support roles. It’s a huge figure, but you gotta keep these things in perspective; the company employs 36,000. Only 200 of those jobs would be overseas, the rest in Australia. What’s a pity is that the firm planned to create 1,200 jobs this year, but that’s not longer an option as its fuel bill has risen BY just under £1bn. The airlines are really getting spanked as the world struggles with not only rising fuel but food prices. All it needs is for the price of DVD rentals to go up and it’s got the triple. US airlines have cut more than 20,000 jobs this year. Come fly with me…please!

25-30 year olds: most unfulfilled at work

July 21st, 2008

Wogan. Still rockin the set Vodafone have done a survey to get some press space, so let’s indulge them. Their findings? Older employees are ‘happier at work.’ Seven out of 10 workers aged over 50 said they felt fulfilled compared with half of 25 to 31-year-olds. The research, based on a survey of 3,800 people, suggested that people in their thirties expressed the most negative feelings about work. Of this age group, 58% felt undervalued, 49% felt unfulfilled and 43% said they were de-motivated.  The report said that mid-career depression was brought on by the pressures of starting a family – no mention of the new “quarter-age” crisis (thank god). The conclusion is more should be done to empathise with and understand those in the middle of their careers. You know my thoughts: Choose the right job. How many of those disillusioned 30 year-olds are working in firm that they never saw themselves staying in. You choose your GCSEs, A-levels and degree based on what you want interests you, but often the jobs that follow are dictated by what’s on that qualification piece of paper, or who looks like they can pay off your debts. Get a career, not a job. That will put a smile on your face into your 30s and beyond. This advertisement for herecomestheboss.com is now concluded!
