Economics in danger of extinction in schools

July 28th, 2008

The Econo-scotch-mist In days like these, its all about finding a gap in the market, well how’s this: 38,000 students went into teacher training last year. Out of that just 3 trained to teach economics. 3! There are now more pupils taking A-levels in Media Studies (watching TV) and Expressive Arts (crying while wearing tights) than economics. The subject looks like being an endangered species despite the number of A-level students rising. Fewer A-level pupils means a smaller pool of potential recruits for university economics courses - and the economics graduates that do emerge from universities then have many options other than entering teacher training. All good. But economics is boring and hard, and why should we do it when there are plenty of Indian and Chinese students happy to put in the hours…hmmm, could the last one out the country please turn out the lights!
