Finally some good news to report amongst all this recession talk: Apprenticeships are on the up.  It appears that those in Whitehall have announced 21,000 new apprenticeships are to be created across the public sector. HR Magazine reports that good old Brendan Barber over at TUC is ecstatically cart-wheeling around his office shouting: “As well as encouraging employers to take on apprentices, it is good to see the Government practising what it preaches and taking on trainees across the public sector too” This news follows survey reults showing that 81% of employers taking part in apprenticeship schemes see them as vital to their business and that 92% think apprentices are more motivated as better training is provide which ultimately leads to better employees.  McDonald’s very own David Fairhurst even weighed in: “Apprenticeships will help give our employees the confidence and competence to do their jobs to the best of their ability, thus delivering an even better service to our customers. In the past three years, we have seen a 10% uplift in the confidence of our people and offering nationally recognised qualifications has played a key part in this. “It is not just our people and our business that will benefit. Apprenticeships are also good news for the wider economy. They enable those who use a job at McDonald’s as a stepping-stone to another career to move on to their next job with a valuable, transferable qualification that helps them hit the ground running.”  It’s never too late to look into apprenticeships and having a degree will set you in good apprenticehip sted.
