Virgin Atlantic double profits
Virgin Atlantic have bucked the trend of the airline industry and nearly doubled their profits on last year. Good times. However the firm says that the recession would make it “almost impossible” for any airlines to make a profit in the current year. Bad times. There has been a slump in passengers and this shows no signs of picking up, so the name of the game is to slow down expenditure and preserve the any cash they have – not good for job seekers. Virgin’s boost came from falling oil prices and an increase in passengers flying in premium or first class where rival BA had seen such passengers drop. Virgin employs about 8,500 staff, with Branson owning the majority share in the company, the other owner being Singapore Airlines – so consider them too if you want an career up in the air.
