What The Budget means for you

Oh my darling, oh my darling… It was a highly anticipated budget this week. But what good does Chancellor Darling do you, other than giving you a pretty good idea of what Noel Gallagher will look like in 20 years time? Here’s the salient points of Budget 09: All under-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed (out of work for 12 months or more) will be offered employment or training – good news. Remember 40% of the unemployed are under 25 years old. That’s a crisis waiting to be squeezed. Booze and gaspers have gone up 2% adding anything from 1p-5p on a pint. Student parents will see an increase in the Child Tax Credit of £20 by 2010, which should cover the increase in the cost of fags. Fuel duty has risen, bad news if you’ve got a car, bad news if you take the bus, where a knock-on price rise can be predicted. And an additional £650m was promised to colleges over the next two years, helping to meet (half way) the demand for places in September. More students. Brilliant.

[…] It seems that you students are a negative lot, whatever happened to that ‘can do’ attitude that makes essay extensions achievable and overdrafts extendible?  A recent graduate careers survey by the good people at High Fliers Research has shown that two thirds of university students do not expect to find a graduate level job after graduation. I, Boss Hanson, didn’t get where I am today by giving up – I bribed, begged and occasionally stole in order to become the well rounded businessman I am today, but it appears that all this recession talk has dented your confidence.  Of the 16,000 final year students survived 52% say prospects for new graduates are limited.  Prepare yourself for a stat-attack ladies and gentlemen, as this defeatist attitude continues with 42% worried that any graduate job they get could be cancelled.  $8% of graduating students are also worried that they’ll be made redundant within 12 months. You are right to be cautious as times are tough, but reports do suggest that recruitment is on the up and that things are beginning to turn.  Plus you’ve got my good friend Alistair Darling in your corner (he once tried to get in my corner, I told him “No, bad Alistair” and it’s never happened again!), find out what his going to do for you here.
