Coke buy into China - creating job opportunities there

September 5th, 2008

Have a pepsi and smile Looking for a career where you can get in a bit of travel and lose your teeth at the same time? Good news: Coca Cola has just paid £1.4bn for the Chinese juice company Huiyan, giving Coke a huge presence in the word’s fastest growing market – of which Huiyan has a 43% share. But, as a lesson to how small the world is, some of that cash will go to French food group Danone, who own about a quarter of Huiyan. As wages and the standard of living improves, the juice sector in China, along with everything else, is set to grow by 10%. That means Coke has done a smart thing with its money, and their brand.

Firms move HQs away from UK

September 2nd, 2008

Hello my Darling! Here’s the truth: business likes to make money. Simple. And if a Government taxes the hell out of a business, it hinders that objective. Right now, our corporation tax is 28% - not as bad as France (34%) or the USA (39%) – but not as good as Switzerland (21%) or Ireland (12.5%). The problem is, if my business can make more money by just existing somewhere else, I may well up sticks and move it to that country – and this notion is the stuff of nightmares for the economy; the move takes jobs, money, and reputation. It’s not just tax – a crap transport system; office space costing a fortune, and the basic (huge) cost of living in London mean some believe we are on the verge of a mass exodus. It’s a question you should not be afraid to ask of a potential employer, after all, you don’t want to trade a life in Milton Keynes for a life in Zurich do you? That said, if you can prove a desire to live and work abroad for a spell, it could be music to a company’s ears. If you like the idea of Switzerland, tell it to these chaps who are reportedly off to the land of Milka Cows and fondue: Google, Yahoo, Procter & Gamble, Electronic Arts. Send me a postcard!

Respecko Aggreko!

August 27th, 2008

I’m stronck to de finsik, coz I eats me haggiz… “Come on you gotta’ listen unto me: lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be.” The advice of Johnny Cash. My advice is equally salient: “Get a job with Aggreko the Scottish mobile power firm.” How many more times have I got to sing it?! My favorite bravehearts are back in the press having one the deal to provide power for the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Village. 150 staff have just successfully completed the £22m contract of supplying power to 37 venues at the Olympic Games in Beijing, helping to raise their half year profits by a credit crunch wedgy-ing 43% to nearly £70m. Aggreko now has a presence in 29 countries and employs more than 2,200 people. For heaven’s sake, get out the whiskey (but not the cocaine) and be one of them!

BAE land £3bn contract. Cue the fireworks…

August 22nd, 2008

How to look good fighting I’m not going out of my way to post good news stories about my pals in the defence industry; there just seems to be a lot of them about at the moment! For example, BAE Systems has signed a 15-year, £2-3bn deal with the Ministry of Defence to supply small arms and medium-calibre ammunition – that’s 80% of the munitions used. So if anyone you know gets caught up in friendly fire, chances are it will be one of BAE’s bullets!  Happy days, thinks you. You’d be right: the contract safeguards 1,700 jobs at factories in Crewe, South Wales and County Durham.  The money will also allow BAE to carry out a £120m investment programme to improve efficiency, plus a much-needed modernisation work on the munitions factories, where some machinery dates from World War II. Why bother? The bullets worked in WWII didn’t they?!

Dorset based spy-firm buy big in the USA

August 21st, 2008

Last of the summer crime Despite the dark clouds of recession, we’ve still got to keep the Hun from our door. No wonder then that our defence companies seem immune to the gloom. Just so for little Dorset-based, Cobham, who has announced a deal worth £14m to acquire US-based intelligence and surveillance company,  GMS. Getting a Stateside presence, (where paranoia is listed as a positive in lonely hearts ads) gives it access to a huge customer base on the West Coast. Not bad for yokel spies.
