Fly high with the RAF

How about a career at the RAF?

Vanessas best day has been realising a dream to be an air-traffic controller, and controlling the aircraft at RAF Cranwell and talking the aircraft down in terrible weather.

For Scott, he followed his father into the service, as he has always been fascinated by aircraft.

Theres loads of opportunities for travel, and ways to get involved in sport and develop skills youd never get the chance to on civvy street.

After a years training at the RAF, as a graduate, you would be looking at a salary in the region of 28,000 - 30,000 a year.

Filling out a CV as a foreign student

What if you were a foreign student in the UK and wanted to apply for a job here when you finish studying? What are the differences in the CV forms? What do UK companies expect to see?

Theres great tips here from the University of Reading Career Advisors as Tania helps our new Italian friend get his CV ready for UK job applications for HR and Human Development type work.

Put your name right in the middle at the top of the CV so it stands out.

Graduates do not need to put there date of birth either as thanks to age discrimination laws in the UK employers do not need to know that.

Make sure your CV shows referees people who will give character or work experience references. Typically you would put lectures down for an academic reference.

The most common mistake is to include spelling errors do not do it! And dont feel modest really sell yourself. Remember that you know what you past experiences involved, but the person reading your CV doesnt so dont assume they can fill in the blanks themselves.

If your having trouble starting your CV look at the Reading careers service website for tips, as well as some titles or chapters you can follow.

What is an Assessment Centre?

Hanson talks to Vanessa Gough of IBM to find out what happens at an Assessment Centre and why clients want to use them when employing their graduates for a career.

An Assessment Centre is a half-day event that employers conduct for potential graduate and student recruits where they go through various exercises so they have every opportunity to display what competencies they have.

There might be an one-to-one interview; a group problem-solving exercise; a communication exercise, some role-play. The aim is to unearth good team skills and communication skills. So the employers can evaluate how you might perform if you became an employee.

The format lasts for half a day so that all candidates have the opportunity to show off their true colours and perhaps change the employers mind from an initial, poor first impression. So nothing to fear but it is most important to be yourself; dont put up a front.

The Assessment Centre will follow an online application form thats all the employer has to go on, so spend time on it and treat it as your first interview.

When attending an assessment centre, you will be covered for expenses. Students can expect to hear back within 2 weeks from attending the event. Listen and win!

The history of IBM!

Hanson chats to the lovely Vanessa Gough about the beast that is IBM.

Who are they? What do they do? What are IBM like to work for? Its all good stuff for a job interview, and will also help you compare IBM to their competition if youre thinking of a graduate career in the IT or consulting sector.

IBM stands for International Business Machines and was started back in 1896 with tabulating machines and even bacon and cheese slicers a long way from computer servers.

IBM performed the USA census of the 1930s when 26million people were surveyed. Then in the 1950s IBM made the first SAGE computers, which 20% of the workforce worked on to make just 56 computers worth 30m each!

Today IBM still make servers but their main revenue comes from services and consulting almost 60% of the business. 70% of Fortune 500 top companies run IBM computers, so you might be thinking that being a big firm makes IBM a safe and secure bet. Vanessa puts it down to stability, history and diversity make them stand out from the competition.

When you work for IBM you need to be flexible and work hard. Burt what a career it can be with Professional Development Managers like Vanessa to mentor you to make the most of your career.
