Xin Hui Chan - 2007 Finalist
Age: 22
University: Oxford University
Degree: Medicine
Xin Hui has been involved in educating on health issues and campaigning since her first year, both at university and on a national and international level. She helped organise an international conference, and assisted with improving access to education. During her time at university she lived in a village in Kenya and raised awareness about malaria and HIV. In addition to hitch-hiking from Oxford to Morocco, she also went to Bosnia to help with ethnic reconciliation and took care of some orphans.
How did you go about taking your opportunities?
I just had to give up some sleep! Have a good social circle who kept me grounded and the people I have done projects with I respect very much.
Do you have any advice to other students wanting to make the most of their time at university?
It is very important that they don't feel that there is one right way to do things. Spend your time doing what makes you happy. There are so many opportunities to meet so many great people whom you might not meet outside of university.
What impact have your experiences at university had on you?
I think it taught me a lot of things: first of all, always be flexible. Second, people always have something valuable to offer even if you think they're wrong. Finally be prepared to stand up for what you believe in. I found a lot of value in doing what I really liked and believed in.
Of what achievements are you most proud?
I don't really know - is the short answer. I have managed to survive doing the voluntary work, I got my degree and I still have friends! That is the thing I am happiest with.
