Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Real World Awards?

Now in its fifth year, previously running under the title of Graduate of the Year, the Real World Awards celebrate the achievements of students who have shown energy, attitude and commitment to extra curricular, work or community based activities.

Real World is looking for students who have gone that extra mile and made the most of their time at university. This year, because of the popularity of the competition, we have introduced a number of new categories:

  • • The Socially Responsible Student of the Year, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
  • • The Entrepreneur of the Year Award, sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car
  • • The Most Improved Club or Society, sponsored by Real World
  • • The Contribution to University category, sponsored by Real World

There is a prize of between £1,000 and £5,000 for the winners of each category along with being part of a feature in a forthcoming edition of Real World Magazine, and national and regional media coverage.

How will winners be selected?

There are 3 rounds to the competition this year:

  1. 1. The entries with the most votes within each category at each university will make it through to the second round. The judging panel will also be handpicking a handful of exceptional entries to go through.
  2. 2. Ten entries from each of the 4 categories will make it through to the third round (40 in total). These entries will consist of the 5 entries with the most votes in each category together with 5 exceptional entries that the judging panel will be handpicking from each category.
  3. 3. The judging panel will select the winners for each category from the top 40 shortlisted entries and the winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony in London.

*Please note that the total number of votes for rounds 1 and 2 will be calculated by multiplying the number of people who have voted for a particular entry by the number of stars they have given. For example, if 1,000 students give Entry A 3 stars, and a further 100 students give Entry A 1 star, Entry A will have 3,100 votes.
