AWARD WINNERS

Hazel Mowbray - 2005 Winner

Age: 21
University: London School of Economics
Degree: International Relations and History

Hazel Mowbray thinks a CV should reflect the person, and hers certainly does, showing someone determined to make the most of her time at university. During her time at London School of Economics she has done far more than simply a degree in International Relations and History.

Music is one of Hazel's interests, and she has taught it in an inner city primary school and a secondary school, and taught the piano as a volunteer at LSE, as well as playing in the University of London orchestra.

Hazel also worked as a legal caseworker for a Tamil organisation, where she helped compile asylum appeals for Tamil refugees. As well as all this, she found the time to pursue her interest in rowing, also getting involved in coaching and coxing.

As the student union's Disabilities Officer she has established weekly drop-in sessions, organized the Disability Awareness Week, and written guides and a prospectus.

Hazel's interests have also taken her abroad, and she spent a summer working for a human rights NGO in Ecuador, and worked in Ethiopia, where she helped set up a project providing ante and post natal care for women. While there, she volunteered in Mother Teresa’s hospital, and with another NGO. These experiences taught her the importance of self-sufficiency, and she says: "I know now that I am as happy alone for three months in a strange county as I am when I am surrounded by my friends. I have learnt the skills at university to make my life exactly what I chose."
