What to include in your student CV

Description:

Help for job seekers in deciding whether to write an education led CV or skills-based CV (which are becoming more and more popular).

When applying for jobs, graduate placements or work experience, you need to think about how to layout your CV in the most appropriate way, depending on its purpose. There are two different types of CV, the traditional CV where education would be one of the first things you include, or the skills-based CV. A skills-based CV may be a particularly good idea when applying to a particular vacancy. After the personal details and maybe a personal profile outlining interests, you will go straight into a skills profile where you will list the key skills you have developed that you know will match the job vacancy, and education will then follow. The skills you have to offer the business are of paramount importance, and they want to them high up on your CV. Highlight your key skills e.g. communication, and use a relevant example to show when you have demonstrated it. When you come to the education section, lay it out in reverse chronological order so that your degree is at the top of the section. Rather than list the contents of the course, include two or three lines of commentary highlighting any particular areas you have enjoyed, and which skills you have developed from specific areas of your course, particularly if they match the skills required for the graduate job you are applying for. Competency based interviews for graduates are very common, and the company will want to see evidence and examples of where you have used your skills. Your CV and application form can prepare you for this.
