Summer 09 - where to look for work

Description:

Getting a job when you graduate can be hard at the best of times, but doing it in a recession needs all your focus and attention, says my old pal Chris, a fella who has spent the best part of 10 years advising graduates about how to get into the world of work with his company Graduate Recruitment Bureau.

When a graduate jobseeker is looking at a sector to work in, they must ask themselves if it is robust in the downturn. For instance, if you are considering a career in finance, consider underwriting or actuarial work, with peoples pensions.

The green sector is going very well, especially renewable energies. You dont necessarily need an engineering degree for these sectors as, although still small, the green sector will consider a broad range of graduates and degrees.

Demand for engineers is still strong in graduate recruitment, especially in large public sector projects and work related to the 2012 Olympics.

Management Consultancy vacancies tend to be with those focused on restructuring their clients a good source of work in recession where people are looking to save costs. The same advice applies to those graduates looking for a career in law or accountancy.

IT too is strong as companies look to technology to make their systems and processes cheaper. Again, IT is one of those broad sectors where you dont have to have a computing degree to work in the industry.

Some areas in the public sector can be very safe for instance teaching and the NHS where regardless of whats happening in the economy, demand remains high.

Once a graduate has decided on the sector they wish to work in, they (you!) need to get ahead of the competition: attend CV and job interview clinics; get work experience in any field including voluntary; but most of all remain positive and passionate.

Good luck!
