5 Tips for a Creative Portfolio

Description:

George Beverley from mind bank, says that there 5 important points to follow when managing your portfolio and getting it up to speed:

Point 1: Choose Your Best Work

Never put anything in your portfolio thats less than 100% as your portfolio is a representation of you.

Point 2: Only Show Your Own Work

Dont ever be tempted to show work that isnt yours, if you do youll be found out very quickly. If youve worked on a good collaboration tell others its a collaboration, as this shows youre a team player and can work with other creatives.

Point 3: Memorise Things About Your Work

Memorise at least two things to say about the work when you present it, that could be what the brief was or some influences behind the work. This shows that you really understand your work and your material.

Point 4: Have 6 - 10 Pieces of Work in Your Portfolio

Having a good range of work in your portfolio will give the viewer time to work out if youve got the skill they need. Having a big portfolio is a good thing, but you need to know when to stop! 10 is really the maximum otherwise it can become a little boring.

Point 5: Demonstrate Your Thinking

Showing the thought process behind your work shows the viewer what your influences were, even if someone doesnt like your work they can at least see your thinking and may find some new appreciation for it.

Remember that your portfolio should be quite an organic thing. Your portfolio should reflect you and change and evolve as you change and evolve as a creative person.
