Sending out CVs - summer 09

Description:

Congratulations you've graduated and survived the celebrations. Now the next step is to find a job. But where do you start? Traditionally the first step is to have a vague idea of what you want to do with yourself, but it seems fewer and fewer graduates have an answer to this question! So get thinking and researching. Once you've got your dream job filed away in the back of your head its time to start thinking about your CV and sending the little blighter out.

There's no harm in applying for a large number of jobs, everyone does it, but its not the best approach to employ. If you do intend to employ this carpet bombing approach make sure that the jobs are all in the same area so you can target your CV at it. Once you've annihilated all the vacancies in that one area, re-engineer your CV and get back out bombing. Personally I find a more targeted, researched and restrained approach to CV applications will yield better results. If you don't at the very least target your CV to one area and applying for sales, pr, recruitment and technology positions questions will start to be raised about you and your commitment to these applications.

If you're applying for 20 or 30 jobs and you're not hearing a thing than you need to check what you're doing, because something is going wrong? Make sure that your CV is correct, take the time to look at it and figure out why it might not be getting through. Its also worth checking that you are sending you CV to the right people? If in doubt give them a call and double check.

You could put your CV on job boards and CV sites as employers or recruiters could come to you. It can be successful, particularly if you're not entirely sure what you want to do or where you want to work.

If you've sent your CV out and haven't heard anything than there is nothing wrong with following it up with a call. In fact its proactive and gives you an opportunity to introduce yourself. Plus in the flip side recruiters are reasonably impressed when you actually ring up and make sure that the CV arrived and if there is anything further you can add to help the application along.
