So if you really want a job, you need to shout loud to be sure to get yourself heard. Reference letters; project portfolios; blogs - people are bolstering their applications with all sorts of new ways of promoting themselves - crucially showcasing their abilities outside of their academic qualifications.

It doesn't need to be fancy; just honest.

• Talk about what interests you - be enthusiastic and honest
• Showcase any experience that is relevant to this job, outside of academic results
